New Age = New Hair!

I turned 18 a few days ago and when I woke up and looked at my self in the morning. My hair is naturally a really dark brown/ blackish and I've been waking up to it for the last couple of ears through bad and worse hair cuts and I wanted something different.

Now I've been seeing this ombre hair trend throughout the fashion world and for a long time as seen here on these lovely ladies:
                                                                       Lauren Conrad
                                                                      Lily Aldridge
                                                                     Rachel Bilson
                                                                     Alexa Chung

I don't know how this trend came about if it was created or someone just got lazy with retouching their roots but it has turned into one of the hottest trends for 2011. The ombre hair style gives this sexy and effortless image. It looks as if your hair was lightened by the sun and over time it grew out. It's a unique and fun way to add dimension to your hair that adds an easiness to your appearance.

I've been contemplating doing it since I saw it but I do have really dark brown (almost black) hair and thought it may be too drastic for me. But on the morning of my 18th birthday I decided "Why the heck not!?!". It's summer time, time for me to experiment and just have fun with myself.

Normally I would recommend going to your salon and have a stylist do this for you as it can be a little tricky and if you value your hair you don't want to be messing it up. But for those of you who are like me and are currently sans employment and don't mind a little experimentation doing this ombre trend at home is easy!

The first thing you need to determine is how light your want your hair to go. To start out I would say go 2 shades lighter than your current hair and then further it if you want a more drastic ombre.

I bought Garnier 100% Color D01 Bleach Kit from my local drugstore - $8.99 (CAD)

To start, make sure you part your hair like you do regularly! You don't want to dye it while parting it down the middle and when you switch it to your left you find out that your whole left side of your hair is blonde! Next figure out where you want to start the ombre. For longer hair I suggest to start 1 -2 inches or more from your chin. For shorter hair, from the cheekbone or from the nose is good. Once you have finished your ombre hair you can decide whether you want it to start higher, but these places are good for starters.

I mixed the bleach and messily applied it 1-2 inches from my chin and concentrated it more on the ends. Feathering it out at the start allows it to look more natural so don't worry if it gets a little messy. I left it in for about 20-30 minutes then washed it out and dried it and thought it didn't have enough of that ombre look. So I reapplied the bleach closer to the end and left is for a longer period (40 -50 min I think) then washed it out. I repeated this process about 3 times, moving closer to the ends of my hair each time. This is the final product:

Personally, I think it looks fantastic and it just brightens up my appearance, I might need to fade it out a little bit more in the beginning but for a first attempt I think it looks great! It does dry out your hair, but just regularly conditioning it will do the trick or try out some Moroccan Oil.

Also, don't be afraid to try and change it up a bit!
going the opposite with light to dark or...
trying out different colours! I know for fall I will be changing it up with a darker red colour!

Overall, super happy with results and the ombre hair trend is definately great for those who want to spice up their hair colour!
